The project was sponsored by the Central Bank in line one of the major recommendations of the Central Bank (CBS) Strategy for the Development and Expansion of the Microfinance Sector in Sudan. Such a recommendation clearly stated the need to undertake an evaluation of Microfinance-Specialized Banks, the SSDB being one of them, with the intention of considering their restructuring in order to empower and enable them to provide sustainable and diverse microfinance services that meet the needs of their target groups. This coincided with the direction of the new Executive Management, appointed in 2008.

Hashab: Best quality gum Arabic, largely produced in Sudan
The Gum Arabic Company (GAC) which was established in 1969 was granted an exclusive concession over raw Gum Arabic export. The main objective of granting the company the exclusive concession was to exercise market power at the international level (i.e. to regulate exports to achieve advantages in price) in order to support the country’s export revenues in foreign currency. This was justified by Sudan’s large share of the world market. Other objectives included the protection of producers and production of Gum Arabic as well as protection of the environment.
However, the efficacy of this policy in terms of achieving its stated objectives has repeatedly come into question.
